You’ve dropped into the website of Australian author Simon Brown. I spend most of my productive time writing speculative fiction, but occasionally write articles for this blog or for other people’s books or websites. Now and then I also do some freelance editing.
Between 2013 and 2015 I did casual work as a journalist with Nowra’s local paper, the South Coast Register, and between 2016 and 2017 worked as a senior communications officer with UnitingCare Australia. Between 2018 and June 2021 I lived in Johannesburg, South Africa, with my wife Alison, an amazing teacher who works in international education.
From July 2021 I’ve been shifting between Canberra, Townsville and Vientiane, Laos, working on a couple of books and writing ‘List’ reviews for a media site called Collider.
From July 2023, Alison and I hope to be back in Australia, possibly … maybe … for good.
Enjoy your stay. Comments and feedback are welcome.
Hello! I’m a huge fan of your Chronicles of Kydan books, though I only discovered them last year, and I just wanted to know if there’s anywhere that I can send fanmail to? I’ve used one of your characters to show my own drawing journey and I recently noticed while rereading the first book that my writing style has also taken after yours, and just a few hours ago, I was ranting to my Dad about how you show queer representation without sexualising it and you represent different races without putting one above the other. Your writing is gorgeous and I would love it if I could send you my art, but social media works too because I can just send photos! I love you and your work, and you’ve been a huge inspiration to me.

Hi River
Thank you for your kind words about the Chronicles of Kydan. I’m flattered you’d use one of the characters as part of your drawing journey.
I would be glad to see some of your art, of course. The best way is to attach it to an email sent to strangeborders@gmail.com, my professional address … I’m afraid I don’t visit Facebook very much, and it’s the only social media I subscribe to.
Again, thank you for getting in touch.
Best wishes
Simon Brown
